The sister restaurant of Cay Tre – this is the larger of the two establishments with a funky downstairs as well as its street level dining room. The menu at Viet Grill features some of the dishes that appear at Cay Tre but also has more grilled dishes such as chargrilled mackerel in banana leaf, a grilled turmeric lamb chop, grilled salt and pepper quail and a delicious dish called ‘feudal roast beef’ which is the house speciality of a restaurant based in Hanoi – it’s not difficult to see the French influence here. Most recently Malcolm Gluck has put together the wine list at both Cay tre and Viet Grill with suggestions of what to drink with what dish. While I enjoy a nice cold Vietnamese beer with my dish there is no doubt that the wines have been brilliantly matched – you will find some really unusual and interesting wines on this list so it’s worth investigating for its wine list alone.
